PRURITUS ANI (itchy bottom)

This can be a debilitating problem for some patients. Symptoms are often worse at night. The commonest causes are haemorrhoids (piles), minor incontinence and worms. Once these underlying problems have been addressed, the itchiness usually resolves. Occasionally pruritus ani can be caused by primary skin problems (dermatitis). If this is the case, the symptoms can often be greatly improved by simple hygiene advice and prescription creams.
